HOLMES ON THE RANGE
Steve Hockensmith
St. Martin's Minotaur, 294 pp., $12.95 paperback
HOLMES ON THE RANGE is one of the most entertaining books I've read lately. Hockensmith packs his story, set in old Montana, with colorful characters and diverse voices that kept me laughing (and admiring) all the way. From the blurb:
"Brothers Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer sign on as hands at a secretive ranch . . . When aother hand shows up dead, Old Red sees the perfect opportunity to employ his [Sherlock] Holmes-inspired 'deducifyin' skills, and sets out to solve the case."
You'll find plenty of humor and enough pathos in this fine story to keep you thinking about it for days after you've put the book down.
